Do you actually need IELTS for Korea?
IELTS is only required for English-taught programs — if you're applying to a Korean-taught program, TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) replaces it. Most international applicants to top-ranked universities apply through English-taught tracks, which is where IELTS matters most.
Some universities accept TOEFL or Duolingo English Test as alternatives, so always check the specific program's language policy before booking a test.
Typical IELTS requirements by degree level
Undergraduate programs at top-tier universities (SNU, Yonsei, Korea University) generally require IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall, with no band below 5.5.
Master's programs typically ask for IELTS 6.0–7.0 overall depending on the field, with research-heavy programs (engineering, sciences) sometimes accepting slightly lower scores than humanities or business programs.
PhD programs usually require IELTS 6.5–7.0, since strong academic writing and communication is expected for research and publication work.
Requirements by university tier
Top-tier universities (SNU, Yonsei, KAIST, Korea University) generally sit at the higher end — 6.5+ for most programs.

What if you don't have a qualifying score yet
Many Korean universities offer conditional admission: you're accepted into the degree program pending completion of a university-run English or Korean language bridge course, typically lasting one or two semesters.
This route is common among Bangladeshi, Vietnamese, and Nigerian applicants who haven't taken IELTS yet, and it avoids delaying your intake by a full year while you prepare for the test separately.
